Your buyers have stopped scrolling ten blue links. They ask ChatGPT, read a Google AI Overview, and check Perplexity — then act on the two or three brands the answer names. Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is the practice of structuring your content, entities, and technical signals so those AI answer engines understand, trust, and cite you as the answer. Silver Crest is a Chicago studio that builds AI products and ships software — so we don't just write you a definition of AEO, we implement the schema, entity graph, and content that gets you quoted.
What is Answer Engine Optimization?
AEO is optimization for answer engines — AI systems like ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode, Gemini, and Microsoft Copilot that synthesize a single answer instead of returning a list of links. Traditional SEO competes for a ranking and a click. AEO competes for a citation inside the answer itself — the moment the model says "according to…" and names your brand.
This matters because the front door of search is changing. Gartner projects traditional search volume will fall roughly 25% by 2026 as AI assistants absorb queries; around 60% of Google searches already end without a click; and 400M+ people use OpenAI's products every week. When the answer is generated instead of listed, being on page one isn't enough — you have to be in the answer.
AEO vs SEO vs GEO — the terms, made simple
These three overlap, and marketers use them loosely. Here's the honest version:
| | SEO | AEO | GEO | |---|---|---|---| | Goal | Rank a page, earn the click | Get cited as the answer in AI results | Get your brand woven into generated AI responses | | Surface | Google/Bing results pages | AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity, voice | Generative engines (LLMs) broadly | | Wins on | Keywords, links, technical health | Clarity, entities, trust, quotability | The same signals, at LLM scale | | Measured by | Rankings, traffic, CTR | Citation frequency, share of voice in answers | Presence and prominence in AI answers |
AEO and GEO are practically the same discipline — GEO ("Generative Engine Optimization," the term coined in a 2023 Princeton research paper) leans academic and LLM-centric; AEO ("Answer Engine Optimization") is the marketer's term and includes AI Overviews and voice. We use them interchangeably and optimize for all of it. And crucially: AEO doesn't replace SEO — it stands on it. Roughly 99% of the URLs an AI answer cites also rank in the organic top 20. If your SEO foundation is weak, there's nothing for the model to cite.
How answer engines actually pick who to cite
We build with these models, so we optimize for how they really retrieve — not folklore:
- ChatGPT (OpenAI). Pulls from its training data plus live web results (Bing-powered). Favors recognizable entities, clear direct answers, and brands it already "knows." Being consistently described the same way across the web builds that recognition.
- Perplexity. A retrieval-first engine that reads sources live and cites inline. Rewards comprehensive, research-backed content with clear structure and verifiable claims. It quotes the passage that most cleanly answers the question.
- Google AI Overviews & AI Mode (Gemini). Draw heavily from top-ranking organic content and structured data. Google's own AI-optimization guidance is blunt: solid technical SEO, unique content, and good structure are the prerequisites. Schema helps machines parse you.
- Microsoft Copilot. Bing-grounded; strong on navigational and transactional intent, favoring clear product, pricing, and comparison content.
The through-line: answer engines reward clarity, self-contained passages, consistent entity signals, and trust. They lift the chunk of text that answers the question on its own — so your content has to be extractable, not just readable.
How Silver Crest does AEO
We work in five layers, from your knowledge graph up to the answer box.
1. Entities & structured data (the machine-readable you)
LLMs reason over entities, not just keywords. We define who you are in a way machines can't misread: a JSON-LD entity graph (Organization, Product, Person, FAQPage, HowTo), consistent NAP, sameAs links to your authoritative profiles, robust About and author-bio pages, and — where it applies — a push toward a Google knowledge panel and Wikidata/Wikipedia presence. Because we're engineers, we write and ship the schema, then validate it — no ticket handed to "your dev team."
2. Quotable, answer-first content
We restructure content so a model can lift it verbatim. That means a 30–60 word direct answer at the top of each section, question-shaped headings that mirror how people prompt AI, self-contained paragraphs, scannable lists and steps, plus the statistics, definitions, and named sources LLMs prefer to quote. This is exactly what our SEO content team builds — content engineered to be extracted, not just to rank.
3. Citations & digital PR (the trust layer)
Models trust sources that other trusted sources trust. We earn mentions and citations on the sites and communities these engines already read — industry publications, expert roundups, comparison and "best of" pages, Reddit and Q&A threads, and authoritative directories — so your brand shows up in the datasets and live results the answer is assembled from. This is off-page authority aimed at AI recall, not just link equity.
4. Technical foundation for AI crawlers
AEO is a technical problem too. We make sure AI bots can actually reach and render you: sane robots.txt policy for GPTBot, PerplexityBot, Google-Extended and Bingbot, server-rendered or pre-rendered content (LLM crawlers are weak at JavaScript), clean information architecture, fast Core Web Vitals, and valid schema. This is the same rigor we bring to technical SEO — and it's where marketing-only agencies stall, because they can't touch the codebase.
5. Getting into the datasets
Long-term AEO is about being the source models learn from. We help you publish the kind of definitive, frequently-cited, freshness-dated content that gets absorbed into training data and repeatedly retrieved — original data, clear definitions, and reference-grade pages that become the default answer in your category.
Measuring AI visibility
You can't manage what you can't see, so we instrument it. We build a prompt set of the questions your buyers actually ask AI, then track:
- Citation frequency — how often each engine names or links you.
- Share of voice — you vs. competitors across those prompts.
- Answer accuracy — whether the AI describes you correctly (and fixing it when it doesn't).
- Assisted signals — branded search lift, direct traffic, and referral traffic from AI sources as they expose it.
You get a clear read on where you're winning answers and where a competitor owns the response — plus a plan to flip it.
Why Silver Crest for AEO and GEO
We're an AI company doing AI search. We build custom AI agents and ML systems through our AI development practice — so we understand retrieval, embeddings, and how LLMs actually choose sources from the inside, not from a blog post.
We're engineers who execute. Entity graphs, JSON-LD, crawler policy, server rendering — the technical spine of AEO is home turf. We ship it ourselves and validate it.
We build AND grow. Your site, your product, and your AI-search visibility can live under one roof. We build our own apps, then we build yours — no translating between three vendors who blame each other.
Senior, transparent, no lock-in. You work directly with the people doing the work, with honest reporting and month-to-month accountability — not inflated dashboards.
AEO is part of one modern search strategy
AI answers, classic rankings, and local search all feed each other. AEO isn't a bolt-on for us — it's built into the core SEO program, sitting on the same technical and content foundation, so you show up whether your buyer types a keyword, asks a chatbot, or reads an AI Overview.
Frequently asked questions
What is answer engine optimization? Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is the practice of structuring your content, entities, and technical signals so AI answer engines — ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, Gemini, and Copilot — understand, trust, and cite your brand as the answer to a user's question, rather than just ranking you in a list of links.
What's the difference between AEO and SEO? SEO optimizes to rank a page and earn a click. AEO optimizes to be cited inside an AI-generated answer. They're complementary, not competing: about 99% of URLs cited in AI answers also rank in the organic top 20, so strong SEO is the foundation AEO builds on.
Is AEO the same as GEO (Generative Engine Optimization)? Effectively yes. GEO is the more academic term (coined in a 2023 Princeton paper) for optimizing your presence inside generative AI responses; AEO is the marketing term and also covers AI Overviews and voice. We treat them as one discipline and optimize for all of it.
Is SEO being replaced by AI? No — it's expanding. AI answers still pull overwhelmingly from well-ranked, well-structured content. What changes is that ranking alone no longer guarantees visibility; you also need to be quotable, entity-clear, and trusted enough to be cited. That's what AEO adds on top of SEO.
How do you get cited by ChatGPT or Perplexity? Make your content extractable (direct, self-contained answers), define your brand as a clear entity with structured data, earn mentions on sources these engines already trust, keep it technically crawlable and fresh, and track your citations so you can improve where you're losing the answer.
What's the best AEO tool? Tools like Profound, Semrush, and SE Ranking track AI citations, but a tool doesn't earn the citation — content, entities, and authority do. We build the tracking you need and, more importantly, do the work that actually gets you cited.
How long does AEO take? Technical and structured-data fixes can influence AI answers within weeks. Building the entity trust and citations that make you a default source is a compounding effort over a few months — the same timeline as durable SEO, because it runs on the same foundation.
